From memory, this is the first time that a meteorite on Earth makes many victims. The latest reports indicate that at least 1,100 injured and hundreds of hospitalizations around the city of Chelyabinsk in Russia after the passage and the disintegration of a fireball in the atmosphere. So far, the number of people injured by meteorites counted on the fingers of one hand, a woman touched the side with a stone the size of a grapefruit when she was napping in her house Alabama in 1954, and a young boy shot in the head in Uganda in 1992, by a fragment fortunately slowed by a tree.

The Russian Academy of Sciences estimated that the meteor that caused scenes of panic in Chelyabinsk was ten tons, and disintegrated over 30 km altitude after entering the atmosphere at a speed of 54,000 km / h.

broken under the effect of sonic boom produced by the passage of the meteorite at high speed into the layers of the atmosphere, even if several fragments were also able to fall to the ground. On a video taken by a resident from his window, one sees the trail in the sky of the meteorite that is already fragmented before hearing a loud explosion followed by breaking glass. "The fact that the explosion occurs some time after the passage of the meteorite shows that it is the shock wave caused by its passage through the air at supersonic speeds," says Jeremiah Vaubaillon astronomer specialist shooting stars at the Institute celestial mechanics and calculation of ephemerides (IMCCE) in Paris.

An explosion of Hiroshima every year into the atmosphere

From several videos filmed at the event in Russia, the French astronomer has determined that the object came from the northeast and moved to the southwest. A path that allows you to exclude with certainty any link with the asteroid 2012 DA14 will come close to Earth 27,700 km away tonight.

"Although meteorite falls generally do very little visible damage, these events are not so rare, however, that," said Patrick Michel, specialist asteroids Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur in Nice. "Every year, between 10,000 and 100,000 tons of solar system objects from coming into contact with the Earth." While most of these meteorites are just simple dust disappear leaving only traces of a shooting star in the sky, some are larger and come hit the Earth. "A study using data from declassified U.S. spy satellites shows that each year, a meteor exploded in the atmosphere by releasing an energy comparable to that of the Hiroshima atomic bomb," says Patrick Michel. "But as the Earth's surface is covered by more than two thirds of the oceans and most parts of the world are sparsely populated, these explosions spend the most often overlooked."

A meteor shower caused by the destruction of a "bolide" above the Ural region of Russia, accompanied by violent explosions and flashes glowing, blew out windows in several localities, panicked. Nearly 1,000 people were injured, some seriously, mainly through broken windows.

Friday morning, a loud noise, shock, vibration, several windows blown out.

An incandescent ball with a very bright white light, moving at high speed, appeared at 9:20 local time (4:20 pm CET) in the sky Chelyabinsk (1500 kilometers east of Moscow), officials said .

"A meteorite disintegrated over the Urals, burning in the lower part of the atmosphere. Fragments of the meteorite hit the Earth and fell in sparsely populated areas of the Chelyabinsk region" said the local branch of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations said in a statement.

According to the local branch of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, the meteorite, estimated by Russian experts from ten to several tens of tons, burned partially entering the lower layers of the atmosphere before disintegrating.

Videos placed on the Internet showed pictures of Apocalypse: Chelyabinsk street suddenly illuminated by a blinding white light, balls of fire across the sky in a smoke trail, windows and doors blown out by the shock wave violent explosions.

"I first thought it was a plane that crashed, but there was no engine noise. Secondly, there was a violent explosion. Many buildings in our street, windows were blown out, "he told Laskov Denis, a resident of Chelyabinsk on public television.
    An exceptional event

The object that fell in the Urals was originally weigh ten tons and measuring about ten meters. According to experts, the meaning of his entry into the atmosphere precludes there any link with the asteroid that is going to come close to Earth on Friday.

The explosion, which would have produced 10,000 m, has in any case been very strong since wall collapsed in a factory.

The university, schools in the region were closed. The Ministry of Emergency Situations said to have mobilized 20,000 men.

Russian President Vladimir Putin was asked to do their utmost to help the population, while local authorities called the people not to panic.
    Nearly a thousand injured

"The number of casualties is about 950," said the governor of the Chelyabinsk region Mikhail Iourevitch, quoted by Ria Novosti. According to the administration of this city of one million inhabitants, the results for this industrial city is only 725 casualties, including 159 children.

According to the governor, two-thirds of the injuries are minor, due to broken glass, and only two people are in serious condition.

This is the first time it seems that the fall of a meteorite causes many injuries. Typically, the celestial objects that reach the Earth fall in uninhabited areas, such as deserts or oceans. It is estimated that between 10 000 and 100 000 tonnes total weight of dust and meteorites that reach the earth's surface each year.

    Tunguska catastrophe in 1908

While such an explosion caused by a meteorite, is this possible? Y he precedents?

"The biggest event of this kind, this is what happened in 1908 in Siberia, Tunguska region. Here, there was an absolutely colossal explosion that occurred in heaven, so in the atmosphere to such an extent that blew millions and millions of trees within 20 km of distance, "said Francesco Lo Bue at the University of Mons," the explosion was heard at this those days, 1500 km, so it is absolutely amazing., but they are rare things that happen. For 1908, we found nothing really ground as fragments, etc.. In the case of the Urals, it is still too early to know what happened. Some say it may be an object of type meteorite that exploded once again into the atmosphere remains on the ground. now c ' is a little too early. "

Note also that in cities 200 miles away, the same phenomenon was

This phenomenon, caused by the destruction of a meteorite over the Urals, blew out windows in several localities. Authorities identify 950 injured.

The fall of a large meteorite caused panic in the Russian region of Urals Friday at 9:20 local time (4:20 in France). Its passage sparked violent explosions and injured about 950 people around the city of Chelyabinsk, more than a hundred had to be hospitalized. Residents of the industrial city of one million inhabitants located 1500 km east of Moscow reported seeing a bright light in the sky before you feel and hear a few moments later the wave shock blew the walls and windows of buildings 3000. The city authorities reported that about 100,000 square meters of glass were broken.

The governor of this region has already been estimated the cost of damage to one billion rubles (25 million euros). Debris caused by the fragmentation of large meteorite left a long white trail in the sky visible to Ekaterinburg, 200 km from Chelyabinsk and Kazakhstan 120 km south.
